Aerial/Boom Lifts

Objective
Teach trainees to safely work on and around self-propelled aerial work platforms, such as scissor-lifts and boom lifts.

Asbestos Abatement (Worker)

Objective
Provides participants with an overview of the OSHA requirements and safety procedures as they relate to the containment and removal of asbestos.

None

Upon completion of the course, the participant will be issued an Asbestos Worker card. The card expires in one year.


Asbestos Abatement (Refresher)

Objective
Provides participants with an overview of the OSHA requirements and safety procedures as they relate to the containment and removal of asbestos.

Prerequisite
Must hold a valid Asbestos Worker certificate. Important Note: Cards that have expired more than 364 days prior to the completion date of the renewal class are not acceptable.

Asphalt Removal & Replacement

Objective
To familiarize the trainee with asphalt and its uses and to introduce them to the tools and equipment used in asphalt work.

Prerequisite
Completion of Fundamentals of Construction class, or basic knowledge of construction, strongly recommended.

Blueprint Reading

Objective
To familiarize the trainee with the basis skills of reading blueprints.

Prerequisite
Blueprints are in English. Ability to read English terms on a blueprint strongly recommended, but not required.

Concrete Removal & Replacement

Objective
To familiarize the trainee with concrete, its history, properties and components. This includes a hands-on portion.

Prerequisite
Completion of Fundamentals of Construction class, or basic knowledge of construction, strongly recommended.

Confined Space Awareness

Objective
To train participants in the hazards and proper procedures as they relate to working in confined spaces.

First Aid/CPR (American Red Cross)

Objective
Learn the basics of First Aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Prerequisite
None

  • Learning basic symptoms that may require aid
  • Performing resuscitation
  • Basic First Aid as it pertains to common construction-site injuries

Certificate
Upon completion of the course and passing of a written multiple-choice test, participants will receive one American Red Cross First-Aid card (expires in three years) and one American Red Cross CPR card (expires in one year).


Traffic Control/Flagging Certification

Objective
The Flagging Certification class teaches participants how to protect fellow construction workers, motorists and pedestrians by safely directing vehicle operators through a traffic-controlled construction zone.

Certificate
Upon successful completion of the Flagging Certification class, including passing a multiple-choice written test and a hands-on demonstration, participants will receive a card from ATSSA certifying that they can be employed as flaggers. The card expires in four years.


Forklift Safety

Objective
To teach and certify participants in fundamental principles of forklift operation, maintenance and safety. Trainees will be able to successfully operate a forklift with a load and have a complete understanding of operating principles, safety and maintenance procedures.

Certificate
Upon successful completion of the class, which includes passing a written multiple-choice test and a driving test, the participant will be issued a Forklift Operator certification card in compliance with OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.178(I).


Hazardous & Toxic Waste Abatement (Worker)

Objective
Provide an overview of federal regulations (Sec. 29 CFR 1910.120) as they relate to the containment and removal of hazardous waste. The course includes information on hazardous waste operations and emergency response.

Prerequisite
200 hours of work as a member of the Laborers’ International Union in the 46 Northern California counties served by the Laborers’ Training Center. Note: This class is in English.

Certificate
Upon completion of the course, including passing a written multiple-choice test, the participant will be issued a card certifying that they are a Hazardous Waste Removal worker. Card expires in one year. Participants who pass a written multiple-choice test will also be issued a National Safety Council First-Aid card, which expires in three years, and a National Safety Council CPR certificate, which expires in two years. Participants also receive a Confined Space card, which carries no expiration date.


Hazardous & Toxic Waste Abatement (Refresher)

Objective
Provide an overview of federal regulations (Sec. 29 CFR 1910.120) as they relate to the containment and removal of hazardous waste. The course includes information on hazardous waste operations and emergency response.

Prerequisite
Must hold a valid Hazardous Waste Removal Card. Important Note: Cards that have expired more than 60 days prior to the renewal class are not acceptable.

Lead Abatement (Worker)

Objective
Provides participants with a basic overview of the hazards and work procedures as they relate to the containment and removal of lead.

Prerequisite
None.

Upon completion of the course, including passing two tests - a hands-on test and a written multiple-choice test, the participant will be issued a “Lead-Related Construction Worker Certificate” by the State of California, Department of Health Services (authorized by 17 CCR 35001 et seq.). The card must be renewed annually, and expires on the participant’s birthday.


Lead Abatement (Refresher)

Objective
Provides participants with an overview of the California Department of Health Services requirements and safety procedures as they relate to the containment and removal of lead-based paint.

Prerequisite
Must hold a valid Lead Worker certificate issued by the California Department of Health Services.

Objective
Provides participants with a basic overview of the hazards and work procedures as they relate to the containment and removal of mold.

Objective

Objective
Teach the trainee the principles of pipe laying and shoring.

Objective
Upon completion of the course, the user will be able to safely work on a scaffold, recognize hazards and be familiar with current OSHA standards.

Skid-Steer

Objective
Provide participants with orientation in the operation, safety procedures and maintenance of a Bobcat.

Welding -- Basic

Objective
To familiarize the trainee with the equipment and safety procedures of the welding shop, to instruct in the basics of welding and provide the opportunity to practice welding under the instructor’s supervision.

Prerequisite
1000 hours worked in the Laborers’ International Union in the 46 Northern California counties served by the Laborers’ Training Center.

Upon completion of the course, including testing on a vertical overhead butt weld that is X-rayed by an independent lab, the participant will be provided with a course completion certificate and a copy of the lab test results that verify they met minimum quality standards.
