Looking for a career in the construction industry? Don't have any experience in the construction field? Looking for good pay and benefits for you and your family? The Laborers Training & Retraining Trust Fund is the Apprenticeship Program for YOU!
Apprenticeship is an industry-driven, high-quality career pathway where employers can develop and prepare their future workforce, and individuals can obtain paid work experience, classroom instruction, and a portable, nationally recognized credential.
The Laborers Training and Retraining Trust of Southern California Apprenticeship Program provides an educational and training foundation for people seeking a career in the construction industry.
Our apprentices can receive their classroom instruction from any of our many training centers around Southern California and Arizona, as well as select classes online. At the same time, our apprentices will receive on-the-job training through employers who are looking for the in-demand skills that the Laborers are known for.
Learn what it means to
Become a Laborer!
According to Apprenticeship.gov there are five key components of an apprenticeship. These components differentiate apprenticeships from other types of workplace training programs in several ways:
Get paid to learn throughout your apprenticeship with a guaranteed wage increase as you develop new skills.
Gain workplace-relevant skills in the field of your choice through on-the-job learning and under the supervision of an experienced mentor.
Gain structured on-the-job learning to prepare for a successful career.
Most apprenticeship opportunities include classroom instruction and experience while allowing you to avoid student debt.
Earn a portable, nationally-recognized credential within your industry.
When you join a local with our union, you will be working under the protection of a union contract while you develop your skills on your path to a career while earning a good living wage for you and your family.
This means you will "earn while you learn" and receive regular wage increases as you collect on the job training time and classroom hours. Even after you complete the program, LIUNA and the Laborers Training School has one of the best free continuing education systems in the world where you can explore new skills and opportunities or to add or refresh certifications that can mean more money for YOU!
We are leaders in keeping our members safe on the job by educating and empowering our members to stay safe from workplace hazards.
By working union, you are also working under a pension plan which means you can retire with dignity.
Join the Union with LIUNA and FEEL THE POWER!
By applying to the Laborers Training School, you will take your first step to becoming a Union Laborer where you will "earn while you learn," which means you will be working on the job site and taking classes in the classroom.
After you fill out your application, you will be invited to attend an unpaid Mandatory Orientation. To be approved to join the program, you must successfully complete the 5-day Mandatory Orientation which consists of: a drug test, a 3-day Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT), and an Oral Exit Interview.
**Mandatory Orientations are scheduled based on the need of the Local Union, which can be a lengthy process. All Applicants must follow the “check-in process” while waiting for an invitation to attend the Mandatory Orientation.
Our Apprenticeship Program provides the opportunity to earn a living family wage through on-the-job training (or OJT) while learning the in-demand skills of our trade through Related Supplemental Instruction (or RSI). By meeting our OJT and RSI requirements, you can move up the wage scale and earn MORE money.
For each period you move up, you will collect work hours of on-the-job training (OJT) alongside your classroom instruction. To view the requirements, see the Programs and Wages below.
For each period, you must complete your Related Supplemental Instruction (RSI) hours in the classroom, covering Certification Courses, Industry Courses, Environmental Courses, Endorsement Courses and a special 8-hour VOICE class. To view the requirements for your instruction and upgrades, see the Programs and Wages below.
Before you can be accepted into our Apprenticeship Program, you must meet these requirements:
At The Laborers Training School, we have three (3) programs to which you can apply. There are different wages and requirements for each, but all will let you "earn while you learn" on your way to a career as a Union Laborer. You will be asked to apply to only one (1) program.
